The beginnings of a fresh paint job were underway on Wednesday at Fermoy’s Grand Hotel.

This follows news that the hotel building on Ashe Quay is understood to be reopening to provide accommodation to those continuing to arrive in Ireland from war-torn Ukraine.

On Monday, workers were seen on site and the doors to the hotel opened once again.

The exterior was power-washed and painting began to freshen up the building, while it is understood that some works may have also commenced on the interior.

“I am delighted to see that work has started on the hotel to help accommodate Ukrainian families,” local councillor Noel McCarthy said.

In 2019, the 12-ensuite bedroom hotel closed to the public, reopening only briefly since to host a seasonal pop-up shop last Christmas. Calls have been repeatedly extended for it to reopen to the public, following its unexpected closure.

The Avondhu attempted to contact those understood to be involved with the hotel for comment, however, comment was not forthcoming at the time of going to press.
