Work on the new extension in Watergrasshill National School is expected to be completed shortly after the Easter Holidays, with a number of the new classrooms already being used.

The extension consists of six brand new classrooms, with a former hall being converted into a large classroom, and a new autistic classroom also being added. A 200 sq metre hall is being constructed, along with a new library and upgrades to the staff room. In total there will be 12 classrooms plus the autistic classroom within the school.

School Principal, Pat O’Brien said construction work is in its final stages, “There are two parts to it, a part to the front and a part to the rear of the school. We’re in the front part with the last number of weeks and we’d expect to be in the rear of the school just before the Easter holidays.

“All going to plan, we’d hope that after the Easter Holidays the outside works will be near enough completed. This just means that the prefabs will be taken out, in the prefabs we would have had four mainstream classrooms and then four learning resource teachers in those cabins as well so they’re all going to be in the school now.”

The design of the extension means that the school will be square-shaped, with a courtyard area within the building. Mr O’Brien said, predominantly, the space will be used by the infant classes.

“It’s very secure so it’s perfect for the infants. There will be seating going into it and yard games going down on the ground there as well. It’s protected from the elements really and it’s a lovely enclosed space.”

Enrolment in September will reach 320 in the school, with all 12 mainstream classrooms being utilised.
