Seventeen year old Dayna Ní Shíocháin from Watergrasshill has been honoured at a gala awards ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC during the 19th annual presentation of the US Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Dayna and her 16 year old counterpart, Elysha Ní Chúláin of Bunratty, Co Clare, were presented with special commemorative trophies by Prudential Financial CEO John Strangfeld and were personally congratulated for their outstanding volunteer service by Academy Award-winning actor, Forest Whitaker.

Dayna, a fifth-year student at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire, North Monastery, Cork city, has spent the past year volunteering as an assistant and companion to Kayleigh, a schoolmate with cerebral palsy.

During their trip to Washington, D.C., Dayna and Elysha also joined the other international students and the American honorees to share volunteering experiences and perspectives, and toured the major sights and landmarks of America’s capital. They also visited a Washington, D.C. elementary school to deliver donated books for their schoolchildren and libraries.
