The hot weather has led to a major increase in water consumption, Pat Walshe of Cork County Council's water production section told The Avondhu this week.

"There's been a major increase in usage on all our schemes," he reported. "It's way up. We're having a huge problem in meeting demand. We may have to consider turning off the water at nighttime," he warned.

He urged people to conserve water where at all possible during the dry spell, including refraining from using hoses to water gardens, wash cars and other non-essential usage.
