The suggestion of having a war memorial erected in Mitchelstown to remember those from the parish of Mitchelstown who died while serving in World War 1 and II, has been mooted by an interested overseas reader who has connections to the area.

The Avondhu would like to hear from anyone whose forebears died in either conflict and who would like to have them included on such a memorial.

It is understood a number of names are already in place but those behind the project would like it to be fully inclusive. Please forward names and addresses (and other details where possible) to The Avondhu office at 18 Lower Cork Street, Mitchelstown or by email: info@avondhupress.ie.

Mitchelstown Heritage Society has also expressed an interest in the project so with your help, this may be brought to fruition.

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.’
