The deadline for nominations for the seventh annual Volunteer Ireland Awards is next Friday, 24th October. Volunteer Ireland – the national volunteer development agency, which organises the awards each year – is urging individuals and organisations from Cork to submit nominations over the coming week.

The Volunteer Ireland awards are the national awards to celebrate volunteering in Ireland. The awards aim to celebrate and recognise the thousands of people across Ireland who give their time to benefit others and are open to volunteers of all ages working with Irish organisations. There are 10 different award categories, as well as an overall ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award.

CHRISTINE BUCKLEY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

When the awards were launched earlier this year, Volunteer Ireland announced that – from now on – the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award would be named in memory of the late Christine Buckley. As co-founder of The Aislinn Centre, Ms. Buckley campaigned tirelessly on behalf of victims of institutional abuse for more than 25 years. She was Ireland's Volunteer of the Year in 2009 and went on to be presented with the award for European Volunteer of the Year at the European Parliament in Strasbourg the same year. The Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented to one of the 30 shortlisted volunteers for the Volunteer Ireland Awards.

Emily Harrington, Acting Manager of Cork Volunteer Centre, commented that “There’s just one week left before the deadline for the 2014 Volunteer Ireland Awards, and we’re calling on groups and individuals from Cork to submit nominations now. To submit, you just have to fill out a simple online form.

“This is an excellent opportunity to recognise the commitment and valuable contribution made by volunteers in communities throughout Ireland. As a nation, we have an excellent tradition of volunteering. So far this year, over 10,000 volunteers have registered with local volunteer ventres and I-VOL, Volunteer Ireland’s national database and smartphone app. These volunteers have clocked up an incredible 360,000 hours of volunteering. Using the average industrial wage, this work has an equivalent value of over €7.7 million.

“There is no doubt but that thousands of groups throughout the country would not be able to do their work without the contribution made by volunteers. We’re calling on members of the public from Cork to take this opportunity to say thank you to their local volunteers, and to nominate an outstanding volunteer they know.”

The 2014 Volunteer Ireland Awards will be hosted this year by TV3 Presenter Sybil Mulcahy.
