The viability of farming and farm families is crucially important to the well-being of communities across Limerick, according to Limerick County TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Niall Collins.
Minister Collins was speaking after he met with the new Chair of Limerick Irish Farmers Association (IFA) County Chair, Louise Crowley and with Darren Sheehy, IFA Regional Executive.
“I want to congratulate Louise Crowley on being appointed as the new Chair of Limerick IFA and wish her the very best with the role,” Minister Collins said: “I want to particularly recognise the work she and the IFA do in representing the interests of farmers and rural Ireland. She has been and will continue to be a hugely effective advocate for farmers and rural Ireland in her role as Chair.
“The Government is fully committed to standing up for Irish farmers and defend Irish interests in opposing the current Mercosur trade deal and will also do everything within
its power to make the case at EU level to secure the retention of the Nitrates Derogation.
“Farmers must be supported – particularly in the area of strengthening farm incomes. Farm families are the custodians of our landscape in Limerick and across the country. They must be helped access vital payments because what they provide in terms of ensuring sustainable food production for a growing world population as well as in being a major driver of the rural economy is so important.”
