Fermoy and District Rotary Club had a special visitor at their first meeting after the summer recess in the Grand Hotel on Tuesday evening. Rotarian Verity Swan made history when she took over as the District Governor of Rotary International in Ireland in July as the All Ireland organisation's first ever female Governor.

For the next year, Verity will be leading 2,500 Rotarians in Ireland, working with Rotary clubs in their communities, partner organisations and supporting Rotary national and international initiatives.

Verity joined the Fermoy and district club members for a meal in the Grand Hotel afterwards addressing them on her own particular theme for her year as Governor, 'Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things'. She said that research has shown that many people would like to get involved in volunteering so this year they are looking at how they can facilitate that by working flexibly around busy lifestyles.

"Many clubs have already moved away from the traditional lunchtime or evening meetings which can be incompatible with busy lives," she said, adding that, with 74 clubs in cities and towns around Ireland there are numerous ways in which people can join Rotary and get involved in the many exciting local, national and international community projects they carry out every year.
