Illegal dumping is becoming the scourge of many rural areas and just this week, up to 50 tyres were discovered in Lyrefune woods in Ballyporeen.

The tyres were dumped along the Avondhu Way walk and Jim O'Brien of the Knockmealdown Active Group said that it is things like this which undo the good work that groups like theirs do in encouraging people to go out and explore what their local area has to offer.

Jim said that the track would be used extensively both by locals and visitors, but that until there are cameras installed and prosecutions being reported, the people dumping materials will not be deterred.

He said that this is a problem nationwide and while the track might seem remote to someone driving through, it is the homeplace for someone else.

Cllr Marie Murphy said that she had never heard of this many tyres being dumped anywhere and she speculated that it was connected to a commercial operator, who may have dumped the tyres instead of paying the fee to have them disposed of correctly.

She added that the dumping of the tyres has now unfortunately attracted more dumping in the area and the tyres were originally blocking an open drain, until they were removed with a digger.

Cllr Murphy assured The Avondhu that Coillte and the council have committed to getting rid of the illegally dumped tyres.
