EirGrid's Grid Link project got a resounding thumbs down from the large attendance at a public meeting in Castlelyons on Monday night.

Members of the larger than anticipated crowd were vocal in their opposition to EirGrid's plans bring a high power line strung on a series of pylons, across the region.

Many appeared shocked to hear how close one of the proposed route corridors would come to the area. Others were extremely critical of the lack of information and awareness around the project from EirGrid.

Some of those present said they hadn't even had time to get their submissions in and would have been unable to do so if EirGrid hadn't recently extended its deadline to January 7.

'Underground them or not at all' was the consensus of the meeting, which was organised by Castlelyons Community Council.

Minister Pat Rabbitte's recent warning that electricity bills would go up if the infrastructure isn't developed was discussed. One woman said she'd prefer to pay more than to have the pylons erected.

James Murphy of the committee referred to the World Health Organisation's contention that no health issue has been linked to the pylons. "Until such time as such links are disproved we don't want them," he said.

A number of local politicians attended the meeting, pledging their support to the community in their fight against the pylons.

It was agreed to attend a further meeting being organised by other communities in the region for Conna on January 20.
