A male driver was detected speeding by the Fermoy unit of Roads Policing on the M8 Motorway on Tuesday morning last.

The Gardaí then discovered that the offending driver was an unaccompanied learner, so the vehicle was also seized under new legislation.

Both the driver and owner now face a court appearance.

The incident was highlighted on the Garda Síochána Cork Kerry and Limerick Southern region Facebook page and was subject to much comment and reaction.

In another case, a driver was held in custody earlier this week after a roadside test carried out by Fermoy Roads Policing showed cocaine and cannabis in his system.

A subsequent vehicle search revealed a quantity of cannabis herb.

The driver was issued with a couple of charge sheets and was held in custody overnight.
