– Independent O'Leary tops the poll – 

A couple of long days counting in Mallow Youth Centre last weekend resulted in two sitting councillors losing their seats in the Fermoy Electoral Area. Those to lose out were Mitchelstown's Kay Dawson (FG) and independent public representative, Frank Roche.

Cllr. William O'Leary romped home and surprised some with a stunning poll-topping performance. Without the backing of a party that did very well locally and nationally, William swept the boards.

"I'm delighted with how things went. The feedback I received during the canvass gave me a lot of encouragement, but you never know until the boxes are opened. People are more important to me than any party," he said in the aftermath of what was a fantastic performance.
