Last week marked a triumphant day for the debating team from CBS Mitchelstown, as they secured their second consecutive victory in this year's Concern Debating Competition.

This year’s team comprises of Fergal O Baoill (captain), Michael Lewis, Conor Quane and Fergal Fouhy and the school boasts a strong background in debating, as last year the school ranked among the top sixteen teams in the country.

The first debate this year was in Mallow, against Davis College on the topic, “Young people in Ireland are building a better world”. The second fixture, against Coláiste Dun Iascaigh in Cahir, again saw the team in opposition, on the topic, “GM Food is essential in the fight against world hunger.”

On both occasions, informative and interesting arguments were presented on both sides, from which each individual speaker during the debate can extract pride. Thankfully for CBS though, the speakers’ diligence and delivery paid off and each motion was defeated.

REMAINING DEBATES

The team are now in the process of preparing for the remaining two debates of the league phase against St Colman's of Fermoy and St Mary’s of Charleville, both of which will take place in January. The school are hoping that the next steps in this process will be just as educational and engaging as the preceding ventures proved to be.
