It doesn’t take much to understand and agree with the business people of Fermoy that they are at a distinct disadvantage to neighbouring towns such as Mitchelstown, Charleville, Midleton etc., because of the pay parking issue.

It doesn't take much to understand and agree with the business people of Fermoy that they are at a distinct disadvantage to neighbouring towns such as Mitchelstown, Charleville, Midleton etc., because of the pay parking issue.

Leaving aside the unfair competition with Midleton, it makes it all the worse seeing as Mitchelstown and Charleville are now in the same municipal district as Fermoy and both these town enjoy 2-hour free parking, so why not Fermoy?

One can also understand the revenue that Fermoy generates as a result of pay parking but surely the issue here is fairness. Fermoy Business Action Group cites a levelling of the playing pitch as being a key driver in the revival of the town.

The latter made their case at this week's council meeting and were at pains to point out that they did not want to see the other two towns going the way Fermoy has gone but rather, want 2-hour free parking introduced in Fermoy.

It is clear that Fermoy needs more footfall if it is to prosper and, as traders stated, if businesses are to continue to pay their rates and pay back rates that are outstanding to the council. Two hour free parking would help make the difference!
