These are busy times on dairy farms with the calving season in full swing. While there can be complications, the priority for every farmer is to have a healthy calf.

Mike and Ann Kenny run a successful dairy operation in Macroney, Kilworth and this experienced couple have seen and done it all when it comes to cows and calves.

What they haven’t had were triplets, and it was the most pleasant of surprises when one of their prize winning herd gave birth to 3 calves last week.

“We’ve had twin calves over the years, but not triplets. Things were fairly straightforward and needless to say, we are delighted to have 3 healthy calves, two bulls and a heifer”, Mike told The Avondhu when we visited this week.

Ann has always been interested in farming and did a lot of the milking when Mike was working outside the farm.

“I always enjoyed being around the cows and learned as I went along. We’ve built up the herd over the years and, while I’m not as involved now, I still take an interest in how things are going”, she said.
