Avondhu area memories from December 1992
Over the past few months, since the Mitchelstown traffic warden retired, parking issues have been high on the agenda for business people and residents in Mitchelstown, but since the Fermoy warden has taken to visiting the area, the problem is visibly better.
This week and last week, warden John Barry from Fermoy has been seen monitoring parking and issuing parking tickets for any violations, while the Gardai were also issuing tickets to those parked in loading bays.
Chairman of the MBA, Mark Waldron told The Avondhu that John Barry is extremely good at what he does and he's a very nice guy who is carrying out his duties as traffic warden in a fair way.
Mark said that while tickets have already been issued, he is unfortunately still seeing people who work in the town parking outside businesses during the peak trading hours between 9 or 10am and 1pm. Furthermore, some workers are not only parking outside their place of work, but also outside other people's businesses and this must stop, he says.
"Even if it's snowing, there's no excuse not to park a little further away and be off the main street. People are still parking in blocks of up to four hours and it's killing businesses. They are not the ones paying rates and rent. They have been asked by employers to park elsewhere and they are killing potential business in Mitchelstown while they are still being paid," Mark said.
He added that when he was collecting donations towards the town's Christmas lights, a lot of business people said that they were struggling to survive and the lack of parking was one of the main problems.
"John is a God-send and hopefully he will straighten the situation out. This is only the start, but it is progress and this is all good news for the town," Mark told The Avondhu.
If people are parked for longer than two hours or are in violation of parking regulations, a €40 fine will be imposed, if they are parked in loading bays there is also a €40 fine.
There is also an €80 fine for parking in a disabled parking space without the proper parking permit and if people fail to display their tax disc or if it is out of date, they are liable for a €60 fine.
If the fines are not paid, they will be taken to court and while some people seem to be under the impression that fines do not apply in Mitchelstown, engineer Brendan O'Gorman clarified at a recent meeting that this is not the case and that unpaid fines will lead to a court appearance.
