A local councillor has expressed his dismay at the planting of blackthorn bushes in front of a memorial to former IRA soldier along the N72 in Killavullen.

In a motion to Fermoy Municipal District this month, Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe said the landscaping scheme undertaken by the National Roads Authority (NRA) shows a total disregard to the memory of James O’Callaghan, who was killed in action on October 16, 1922.  The memorial is located at the crossroads of the N72 and L1225/L97214 at Monanimy, Killavullen.

“There’s a double line of blackthorn bushes set there lately right in front of the memorial. That’s showing a total disregard for one of our fallen War of Independence and Civil War heroes. I can’t believe the NRA could have done that. It’s an embarrassment to see blackthorn bushes set in front of it,” said Cllr O’Keeffe.

He requested that the NRA show ‘due consideration for the James O’Callaghan Memorial’ and in turn put in place an appropriate landscaping scheme. His motion has been referred to the NRA for comment.
