An award winning environmentalist has called for plans to rebuild the Fermoy weir to be abandoned and said its destruction is a positive for the area.
David Lee from Kildorrery, has been campaigning for better environmental conditions on the region’s rivers. He won an award from the Cork Environmental Forum for his work on the Funcheon and Farahy rivers.
He said that there has been a marked increase in the amount of salmon in the rivers with a combination of reduced fishing fleets due to Covid-19 and the fact that many barriers have been removed in the Blackwater. This includes the massive breach in the weir at Fermoy.
