As students received their results on Wednesday, the next few days as they await their CAO offer will no doubt be nerve wracking.

For many students, their offer will be straight forward, but for others this can be a difficult and uncertain time, for which the Griffin Guidance Counselling Agency is on hand.

The Griffin Guidance Counselling Agency is led by Lillian Griffin B.Soc.Sc, PDGC, who has been working as a guidance counsellor since she qualified with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in 2006. Lillian has worked in a number of schools since then and has also built a strong private career guidance business.

“Each August I meet with Leaving Certs who have not received their first choice and this can often leave them feeling uncertain and nervous about accepting a different course. This can be equally as difficult for parents and the decision can be a tough one to make.

“When I meet with these students I will examine all of their options in terms of acceptance or non-acceptance, possibly examining the prospect of repeating the Leaving Cert or looking at avenues which may get them back on track with their first choice at post-graduate level,” Lillian explained.

She added that she offers a wide range of career related services to students and adults and also offer services such as mentoring, anti-bullying, sexual health awareness and study skill programmes through schools.

The student services include advice and guidance in areas such as subject choice at both junior and senior cycle, researching third level options and courses, filling out the CAO, applying to SUSI, study skills development and future planning, as well as college preparation. Lillian also works with third level students assisting them with future planning in terms of post-grad or job application options.

In terms of adult guidance services, she helps people to research their back to education opportunities, helping them with CV preparation and interview skills, job hunt assistance as well as aptitude testing and interest inventories.
