Nicola and John, a young couple from Tipperary, had always talked about fostering. In 2022, they decided to finally take the leap and apply to foster with Fostering First Ireland. At the time, they already had two children, aged six and eleven. Nicola was at home full-time due to Covid-19, and they felt that now was the perfect time to open their home to children in care.
“We love kids and the happiness they bring,” they share. “It’s unbelievable. The moment the first foster child came through the door, our lives changed completely.”
Initially, they had some apprehensions. Nicola, says she is naturally a quiet person, she feared she wouldn’t have the strength to advocate for these children. But fostering transformed her.
“These kids come into your life, and you find strength you never knew you had,” she reflects.
The couple were approved to foster siblings aged 0-5. They didn’t know when or who would come into their lives, but they soon got a call about a newborn due in just a few days. Without hesitation, they said yes. “She’s just magic,” they recall.
About 10 months later, they received another call—her little brother was on the way. Keeping the siblings together felt deeply meaningful to them and something they were keen to do, despite having two under two!
“It’s so lovely to see their bond and relationship grow,” Nicola says. “It’s also so good for our own children. Fostering has taught them empathy, kindness, and responsibility.”
Fostering First Ireland (FFI) has been a pillar of support for Nicola and John.
“You’re never alone,” they emphasize. “There’s a number in FFI to call 24/7, 365 days a year. Even though we’ve never had to use it, knowing it’s there is a great comfort.”
Monthly support groups and therapy sessions also help them navigate the challenges and joys of fostering.
One of their favourite aspects of fostering is the little moments—family time spent on the play mat, watching their foster children form bonds and express love in small, beautiful ways. “Seeing our foster daughter kiss her little brother on the cheek is pure magic,” they say.
Fostering has doubled their family in just two years, from two children to four, and they have no regrets. “Keeping siblings together in foster care is something very special,” they emphasize.
Right now, there is an urgent need for more foster carers across Ireland. Many children require safe, loving homes, and there is a particular demand for carers willing to take in siblings, older children, and those with additional needs. Without enough foster families, siblings can be separated, making an already difficult situation even more distressing for the children involved.
Fostering is not without its challenges, but the rewards far outweigh them. It provides children with stability, security, and a chance to thrive in a nurturing environment. More families like Nicola and John’s are needed to step forward and make a difference.
Some people ask if it’s overwhelming. “Not at all,” they say. “It’s the best kind of busy.”
For anyone considering fostering, Nicola and John have one piece of advice: “Go with FFI. You won’t be disappointed. The support is incredible. You’re not just a number; everyone knows your name and your family. It feels like home.”
Fostering may have started as a dream for Nicola and John, but today, it’s their way of life—one filled with love, joy, and unforgettable moments.
