The Galtees Toastmasters is delighted to have been part of Mitchelstown’s Culture Night on Friday. Firstly some members of the club attended at the library to hear some lovely music and song, poetry readings and some storytelling. It was a great showcase of the talent in Mitchelstown. Then our president Mary Meaney, treasurer Conor O’Brien and PRO Máire Corbett attended the inaugural 'speakers' corner' (introduced by Ciarán Garvey) in New Square, where those assembled were free to wax lyrical about any subject under the sun.

Conor got the ball rolling with a great recitation, Mike Cullen Aherne also treated us to a poem, Seamus Fox asked us who do we think we are and then told us of his family story. A highlight was when Mary Meaney told us of what Toastmasters means to her - how, when she arrived she thought she’d stay for a few meetings but then came to realise that there are always new skills to learn and new leadership opportunities to pursue. She said that at her first meeting she looked with awe at the man with the chain and to great applause, informed us that she is now wearing that chain. Well done Mary.

We look forward to further involvement with Bunty Flynn and her team who organised Culture Night and send them big congratulations for the many events they planned for the day.
