As we celebrate St Patrick's Day around the world, there are calls from a number of quarters to enjoy alcohol responsibly and for us, not to spoil it for ourselves and for those closest to us.

Drink Aware's chief executive points to the many fantastic events planned nationwide to celebrate St Patrick’s Weekend and is encouraging those drinking alcohol, to pace themselves and to take it easy.

Although we are drinking 20% less overall compared with a decade ago, when we drink we tend to drink too much and too fast. By following a few rules like planning ahead, eating well before going out and pacing oneself, this year’s celebrations will be all the more enjoyable and memorable.

The advice is to do more (don't let drink be your only activity), eat well, plan ahead and again, when you do drink, to pace yourself. If you do suffer a hangover, a sensible rule is, let time take care of it, because while you may feel better after 'the cure', you still may not be fit to drive. And, if you are concerned that drink is affecting you or your family, perhaps it is time to seek help.

With several parades to choose from in The Avondhu readership area, we encourage you to at least support your local parade and better still, become involved. Have a great weekend!
