The horrific incident in Athlone at the weekend that saw two young girls aged nine and six lured away from a children’s party and sexually assaulted, is a stark warning to parents and childminders that they have to be forever on their guard. The incident that saw crowds take to the streets to vent their anger over the incident, has caused revulsion and disbelief throughout the country.

It is hard to comprehend that the girls were lured away from a children’s party in the middle of a residential area of the Co Westmeath town only to be subjected to this most vile abuse. Luckily, they managed to escape through a window to raise the alarm.

The parents of the children have been loud in their praise for An Garda Síochána for what they describe as ‘their compassion and professionalism’. Speaking publicly for the first time on Wednesday morning, they also thanked the other professional care providers and wished to recognise the kindness and practical support they have received from the people of Athlone, which they described as being ‘immense’.

This unthinkable incident is every parent’s worst nightmare. It proves though that being alert to those around you is so important in this day and age and, should you have reasons to believe that something untoward may be happening in your locality, let a member of the Garda Siochana know of your fears. While they may be unfounded, it is after all, better to be sure than sorry!
