A group of green-minded teenagers are lobbying for all public bins to be replaced with eco-friendly recycling units to help make Ireland a leading example in the fight against climate change.
Junior certificate students from Cross and Passion College, Kilcullen in Co Kildare who have presented their proposals to government TDs in the Dail, want to see all public bins installed with recycling options, such as a brown bin for food waste.
This, they believe, will help dramatically reduce the level of waste sent to landfill each year, where toxic gases are released into the atmosphere.
The idea could potentially make Ireland a world leader in anti-pollution measures while also significantly reducing the country’s carbon footprint.
“We want people and the authorities to take action now,” said Jane O’Toole (14), who recently returned from a trip to Malawi with Concern Worldwide, Ireland’s largest humanitarian aid agency, where she saw the human impact of climate change.
