Marian Shinnick, a well loved primary school teacher at Gaelscoil de hÍde in Fermoy, got a lovely surprise recently when five of her past pupils called to her on her last day at school to wish her congratulations and best wishes on her retirement.

Laura Buckley, Ema O’Hagan, Emer Shinnick, Shauna O’Farell and Eidín Shinnick all arrived up to Gaelscoil de hIde on the day of Marian’s retirement with a bunch of flowers and plenty of well wishes.

Marian has been teaching at the Gaelscoil since 1995 and her dedication to the school and to her students has had a significantly positive impact.

The five past pupils were all home in the locality for Christmas and so, they arranged the surprise visit.

LASTING EFFECT

One of the past pupils took to Facebook saying, “Marian taught us how to be kind, how to stand up for ourselves and how to be there for one another.”

It has been around 18 years since the girls were sitting in the classroom looking up at Muinteoir Marian but her influence has had a lasting effect on these girls and indeed on many others.

Congratulations to Marian on her retirement and well wishes for the future.
