Co-op development plan appealed
All roads led to Gaelscoil de hÍde, Fermoy on Sunday last, June 9 for the annual summer fete. Preparations had been ongoing for a number of weeks and I must say that it was all worthwhile when Sunday proved to be a fabulous family fun day out. The sun shone which made our school yard a very pleasant place to be.
There was something for everyone at the fete. Our bric-a-brac sale as well as our book sale both proved to be very popular with both young and old. There was beautiful home baking available, which was all sold on the day and we had a few very talented young buachaills who had a very tasty stand which were baked by the boys themselves – watch out master chef. Our very talented photographer Dermot Fitzgerald was busy taking children’s portraits – which we are looking forward to seeing.
Lots of the children were able to experience working a potters wheel and we now have two new pots drying nicely on our windowsill. The children had great fun on the obstacle course, bouncy castle and sumo wrestling which were supplied on the day by Padjo McCarthy. There were loads of side attractions like lucky dip, lollipop stick game, lucky bags, double decker, hook a duck etc. There were also basketball, golf, football and Wii competitions. 6th class students had a few stalls on the go with candyfloss, beautiful homemade lemonade and sweet items and the boys had a sponge-throwing stand with some very wet buachaills at the end of the day.
Herlihy’s Centra, Fermoy cooked us delicious burgers and hot dogs and Tracey and Aisling kept the food flowing for the day. We had Ollie’s gorgeous owl which was in great form and didn’t mind being photographed with the boys and girls. There was also a raffle for a weekend in Dublin and a €150 voucher for Hennessy Cycles.
Gemma and Seamus had beautiful pots and planters which showed very clever ways of using pots and recycling items. We had some beautiful Silver Pail ice cream and drinks stand. The children were delighted with the large noisy balloons. A new item this year was the lucky mug stand which saw one lucky girl win a €10 note amongst the items in her mug – well done to Gill O’Regan. There were some excellent quality uniform items on sale at our uniform recycling sale.
Also, our very popular wheel of fortune saw many people go home with some fabulous prizes and vouchers. My goodness I can’t believe that there is another fete over, I am not sure but I do think this was our 10th – I must check that out! There was so much to do that it was closer to six o’clock when we finished up. It was a great day and we hope you all enjoyed it and we thank you for your support.
SPONSORSHIP
Our fete would not have been so successful were it not for the very kind sponsorship and help of the business people of Fermoy and local area – we even got sponsorship from as far away as Carlow. Ye are all so good and we hope that you all have the continued support of the local population. There are too many businesses to name out again so to you all, we say 'go raibh mile maith agaibh ó gach duine as Gaelscoil de hÍde'.
THANK YOU
A very big thanks to all the moms, dads, students, past students who gave a helping hand on the day. To Ollie who did a great job also on Sunday. To Vinny who was very busy accepting in the spot prizes and there were lots of them. Well done to Cairde de hÍde on yet another great summer fete.
SCHOOL TOURS
We hope 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th class have a great school tour this week in Mallow Let’s Go and the Mardyke arena in Cork. Also the junior and senior infants who are going to Fota and Monkey Maze this week.
HEAD SHAVE
On Monday, June 17 at 12 noon a very generous act will take place. A lovely cailín named Áine aged 10 and in 3rd class and her mom Gemma will have their heads shaved in aid of the Breast Care Clinic at CUH in Cork. Gemma is no stranger to having her head shaved as she has done it on a few occasions and each time her hair has been donated to a very worthwhile cause known as Locks of Love.
This American based charity who make hair pieces for sick children require large amounts of human hair which has to be of a very high quality and must conform to specific requirements regarding length and thickness and we all know that both Áine and Gemma’s hair definitely fits the description. Gemma has supplied hair to the organisation previously and both mom and daughter will be in the very capable hands of our own Trisha Ring on the morning.
It is truly a wonderful thing that the two girls are doing and with Locks of Love receiving beautiful hair, the breast care unit at Cork University Hospital will benefit from any sponsorship that the girls receive for their generous gesture. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause you can drop donations to the office, place in envelope with note saying head shave donation or to any Cairde de hÍde member. The work done at the breast care clinic is phenomenal and would be very deserving of any funds raised. We wish Áine and Gemma all the best for Monday at Gaelscoil de hÍde.
