Ardkeen, Fermoy has its very own Proms!
With the trip to Dublin on 29th July to visit Kilmainham Gaol and Croke Park Stadium, the club is taking a month’s break for summer. It has been a successful six months since the New Year, with a series of lectures both interesting and entertaining, and a number of trips and excursions. The club meets every second Monday in the month at the Fermoy Community Youth Centre, at 3pm. The usual programme is a talk or lecture on a subject that would be of interest to the members, such as health issues, local history, local developments, music, conservation, in fact there are many topics which have yet to be explored. For example this year, so far there has been nutritionist Karen O’Mahony, historian and raconteur John Arnold, psychotherapist Dick Mackessy, Billy O’Shea on bee-keeping, Hilary Reynolds on her career as an opera singer and choir master and John Howard on the nature conservation project in Corrin. The talk is usually followed by a club meeting to discuss club affairs and trips.
There is usually a trip or excursion arranged for each month. This year the club has visited the Hunt Museum in Limerick, the Collins Barracks Museum in Cork, Cahir Castle and Swiss Cottage and the Woodlands Falconry in County Wicklow. A very enjoyable barbeque was held in June in the Forge Bar in Fermoy.
Walking, in the woods and through the countryside is another frequent activity of club members, with usually a walk arranged each month. The usual duration is about two hours, with routes chosen for those who are reasonably fit.
The membership is about sixty men, mostly retired (although that is not a condition of membership). The numbers attending meetings and lectures averages about 40, actual numbers vary depending on the topic (John Arnold had the biggest attendance for the meetings since January this year!). Similar average numbers have gone on the excursions.
The next meeting is schedules for Monday, 9th. September at 3pm in the Fermoy Community Youth Centre, and the guest speaker in John Arnold again. The club is always open to new members, just come along to a meeting and you will be very welcome.
