An individual was so concerned about an incident he witnessed last weekend involving a sulky that he outlined it to The Avondhu to highlight the danger.
The local man explained that he was travelling in the direction of Fermoy near the Corbett Court on the old N8 in the early afternoon on Saturday last when he saw traffic backed up behind the sulky. A Volkswagen Golf car with four to five occupants, was tailing the horse-drawn vehicle and sounding its horn continuously. The result was that the horse, seemingly fearful of the noise, was travelling at high speed.
"Weather conditions were atrocious at the time, there was heavy rain and visibility was very poor," the caller pointed out. He thought that it was a case of the horse being put through its paces for the benefit of the VW's occupants who may have been interested in buying it. "All I know is that it created a very, very dangerous situation. The animal was being made, in my view, to travel way too fast in such conditions. It could have caused a pileup if it had become spooked."
Because visibility was so bad, other motorists were reluctant to overtake, he said. A check with Gardai revealed that they had not received a complaint about the incident.
