A productive link up between public representatives, the GAA, community groups and FAS has resulted in a previously run down area in Fermoy receiving a substantial makeover.

The area in question is to the rear of houses in Wolfe Tone Park, close to the Beechfield/Dublin Road intersection and opposite Shinnick's SPAR.

Initially raised by members of Beechfield Residents' Association, the case was taken up by Cllr. Noel McCarthy along with assistance from former councillors, Tadhg O'Donovan and John Murphy - all 3 are heavily involved in Fermoy Tidy Towns committee.

CONSULTATION, CO-OPERATION & TEAMWORK

The back lane in question also serves Pairc Liam MacGearailt and Fermoy GAA were duly consulted and their input sought. Having got all the vested interests on board, a plan was drawn up to remove large amounts of rubbish that had built up over the years, clear the area and re-seed it. FAS, through a community employment scheme, did the bulk of the work, a point acknowledged by Tadhg O'Donovan.

"After extensive consultations we were able to proceed and FAS workers, under the direction of supervisor, John Feeney set about carrying out the work. The end result is very impressive and it's a major step forward in addressing what was a largely run down and ignored part of our town", Tadhg commented, going on to say what had been achieved was a result of consultation, co-operation and teamwork.

It's proposed to control access to the lane by erecting bollards and having designated key holders.
