Loreto Secondary School Fermoy, were double winners at the recent Feis Maitiú Corcaigh, with their Second Year Choir and School Choir both awarded first in their respective categories.
Under the tutelage of Tim Fouhy and Deirdre Foley, the school’s two First Year Choirs also placed in the competition, finishing second and third in the Loreto Perpetual Cup for Unison Singing.
The Second Year Choir won the Echo Perpetual Cup for Choirs 15 years and under. Donated by the Evening Echo to mark the inaugural Feis, the trophy has witnessed every one of the festival’s 89 years.
The choir sang 'Give Me Wings' by John Rutter and their second song was a setting of the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty, arranged by Dave and Jean Perry.
The School Choir claimed the Father Matthew Perpetual Shield Competition for Choirs 19 years and under. On their way to clinching the award, they performed 'So Fair and Bright' by Bob Chilcott and 'Blackbird' by Lennon & McCartney.
In finishing second and third in the Loreto Perpetual Cup, the First Year Choirs sang 'All Things Bright And Beautiful' by Peter Jenkyns, 'Keep it Goof' by Bob Chilcott, 'Bessie the Blackcat' by Peter Jenkyns and 'A Clare Benediction' by John Rutter.
Furthermore, a number of Loreto students were awarded highly commended in the 13 and under singing, sections 1 and 2: Linda O’Donnell, Niamh De Roiste, Ciara McGarry, Kay O’Sullivan, Eniola Amosu and Stephanie O’Donoghue.
“Feis Maitiú provides a wonderful platform for these young students to present their work before experienced professional adjudicators who asses, encourage and help improve performances,” said Tim Fouhy.
Marilynne Davies from England was this year’s adjudicator for the School Choir Competition.
