Glanworth National School hosted a special event on Tuesday, 24th June to launch a book titled, ‘Now That’s What I Call Creative Writing 2014’. The book is a catalogue of a year’s worth of creative writing compositions by the children of third and fourth class.

Throughout the past year the children worked both collaboratively and independently to create an endearing collection of fairytales, letters, e-mails, plays, diaries, poetry and interactive stories.

The aim of the project was to foster a positive attitude towards literacy and to develop the children’s attitude in their writing and public speaking. It also allowed the children to be part of teacher Mairead Hayes’ doctoral research on the subject of creative writing and its effects on the self-esteem of young children.

On the night, the children were given the opportunity to showcase their hard work to their families and fellow students, as each child read aloud one of the pieces they had created during the year.

There was a display of interactive stories which showed the children’s work on an interactive whiteboard, along with their own illustrations and voiceovers. One group of students also performed a play at the event.

Principal Elizabeth Desmond thanked parents for assisting and supporting the children in their writing during the past year. The event was followed by refreshments which were provided by the parents’ council.

‘Now That’s What I Call Creative Writing’ will be available in local libraries in the coming weeks, and will join last year's publication ‘Green Schools Poetry’ on the shelf, which was also written by the children of this year’s fourth class.
