There was great excitement in Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown, as a new catering company transformed the lunch options for the students.

Samantha Kelly of Wrap It Up under KC Catering Group based in Bandon, told The Avondhu that this is their eighth school and they just started there last week.

She said that they offer students healthy, home made lunch options, which tie in with people's healthy eating habits, while they also let students make up their own rolls from the deli and this encourages them to try new things and experiment with flavour combinations.

Principal Anne Kirke told The Avondhu that the food provided is fresh, healthy and economically priced.

"The students are now able to get a hot meal for €4 or less and soups and salads are very affordable. We look forward to having this service at our school for a long time to come," she said.

The catering company was started 15 years ago and they have been working in schools since 2008 and hope to get into more schools in the future.

They employ about 30 people altogether and Samantha said that they employ local people where they are working and would try to get local ingredients and produce where possible.

She added that prices are kept to a minimum, and students can get something healthy and tasty for lunch from anything between 50c and €4.

They also base their menus on what is in season, so in the winter, there would be different hot dishes, while in the summer they would have a variety of salads and fresh fruit.
