The community house located at Stag Park estate in Mitchelstown is at the heart of the community providing courses, clubs and information talks for parents and children, through Ballyhoura Development.

Last week, a Hallowe'en camp was run over the course of three days and local councillor, June Murphy saw how much the children enjoyed themselves, what an asset the house is to people in the area and hailed the great work being done there.

Cllr Murphy said that Geraldine Lyons, Ballyhoura Development, the TUS workers and local people are doing great work to ensure that there is something for everyone at the community house.

Many courses have been run there including ones on computers for beginners, personal development, gardening, cooking and more. They are currently running homework clubs for school children, as well as regular coffee mornings and information talks for parents.

'EMPOWERING PEOPLE'

Cllr Murphy encouraged more local people to get involved, as initiatives like this need to be supported and kept going.

"These types of initiatives are the lifeblood of our communities and provide a wide range of excellent services. They are a great example of the kind of ground level work that our community development companies, such as Ballyhoura, do in conjunction with local people.

"With projects like this, Ballyhoura are empowering people and communities and enabling them to provide for their own needs and it is great to see the people of the area, with Geraldine’s help, rising to the challenge and taking things on themselves. I look forward to being of assistance in whatever way I can in the future," she said.
