TJ Willis, W Hunter and D Hannon receiving 1st prize at St Joseph’s CBS junior scramble.

St Joseph’s CBS ran their annual golf classic in Doneraile Golf Club on Saturday 29 and Sunday, June 30. Thirty seven teams played over the weekend and the juvenile members of the club participated in a competition on Saturday morning.

The weather was in our favour with just a little mist falling on Saturday morning. Our juvenile competition was won by TJ Willis, W Hunter and D Hannon and in 2nd place was B Cronin And W Flynn.

Following the golf classic on Sunday evening we had the presentation of prizes, our master of ceremonies was Finbar Hallahan, chairperson of the parents council, and after welcoming and thanking everyone for supporting such a worthy cause the prize winners were announced. In 1st place were A Lilley, S Lilley and D Hallahan, with 95 points. In 2nd place with 92 points was K Cotter, A Cotter and J Nolan, Gross prize went to T Meade, T Sheehan and D Carey 3rd prize went to J O’Keeffe, B Sweeney and C O’Toole

This golf classic would not get off the ground without the support of Doneraile Golf Club, its management team and course staff, we owe immense gratitude to them for providing us with the facility to run this event year after year.

To run a classic sponsors are needed, once again this year we did not have to venture outside the town of Doneraile for our main sponsors, to you we would like to extend a sincere thank you. Our main sponsors for 2013 were, Londis Food Store, Spring Nurseries, Centra Food Store, Doneraile Tea Rooms and Mary Roche of Doneraile Golf.

To all those who sponsored teams, tee boxes or gave donations, to the parents of both past and present pupils to the general public who supported the cause through buying raffle tickets or allowing their children to participate in the junior golf competition, thank you.

A note of thanks is also extended to Frankie Carey who looked after the score-cards throughout the weekend, to Jennifer Hickey and her team who helped to organise the junior golf competition, Mary Roche and her staff who looked after all the refreshments and once again nobody was disappointed and all dietary requirements were catered for, to Geraldine the school secretary who was a huge help and who was quietly working in the background and finally to Assumpta O’Connor for providing us with a beautiful floral display to show off our table of prizes.

The golf classic is run by the parents council of the school and unfortunately numbers are dwindling and four members are leaving this year as their children are moving onto secondary school so we would like to appeal to parents to get involved in the committee, they would be very welcome.

Money raised by the parents council is used to benefit the children providing them with access to athletics, music, dance tuition, golf tuition, it subsidises transport for the school tour and swimming which in turn reduces the cost of these events for parents, it is also their to provide or improve facilities in the school for the children if necessary.

It is imperative that the parents’ council remains active in the school.
