As prospective students took their first stroll through the corridors of St Fanahan's College in Mitchelstown, they saw a range of opportunities before their eyes and as they sampled the practical subjects in workshops during the day, it gave them a flavour of the St Fanahan's experience, before their parents came to look around and meet the staff later that evening.
Throughout the course of the afternoon, prospective students from primary schools in the catchment area got to meet new people and try new things, as they tried their hands at some of the new subjects they could dabble in, if they chose St Fanahan's College as their second level school.
New principal, Tadhg Long spoke about how the open day is designed to be as interactive as possible, not only for students, but also for parents and guardians. He added that choosing subjects in first year can seem a little daunting and confusing, so to ensure that students make the right choices, they give each student the chance to complete a two month taster of each subject.
As well as academic development in various subjects, students also have a host of extracurricular options to choose from, including anything from art and drama, the FAME show (which had its tenth year this year), to sports, Formula 1 car design, Green Schools and music.
The principal said that they want every student in St Fanahan's College to learn together, but grow individually.
