As by-election fever made headlines around the country this week and last, the equally important student council election campaigns are also under way at St Colman’s College, Fermoy.

Each year, St Colman’s students get the opportunity to experience the democratic process in action, as they strive to get nominated and elected by their peers for the honour of serving on the student representative body.

This is the first experience students would have of the democratic electoral process, which is designed to be extremely realistic. This encompasses the initial nominations that must be endorsed by a teacher, to the hustings and election speeches, culminating on election day when all voters receive a realistic looking ballot paper depicting the photographs of the various candidates.

An enthusiastic poster campaign is part and parcel of the elections in the school with students creating their own poster in Art class. Like real life politics, many of these promise all sorts in return for votes. Polling day is on Thursday, October 23 and the results will be announced at the school the following day. Best of luck to all candidates!
