St Colman's College in Fermoy has a proud sporting tradition but they're relative newcomers to basketball. All the more reason then that their team's recent progression to the semi-finals of their second year competition was noteworthy.
The team managed to beat off their close Fermoy rivals Coláiste an Chraoibhín in a challenging match that proved to be nail-biting stuff from start to finish.
St Colman's got the first basket, giving them a nice boost in confidence. They scored another three in that quarter but Coláiste proved equally determined and managed to keep in touch to trail by just two points after the first quarter. The second quarter saw Coláiste find their form quickly, taking the lead and extending it to nine points at half time.
St Colman's though showed great determination when play resumed and picked up momentum considerably to draw the game level ending the third quarter with a score of 23-23.
Anyone's game at that stage, the final quarter proved exciting. Coláiste fought to the bitter end, giving everything they had but it was the boys in green who came out on top. From being nine points down they fought back for a six point win, leaving their opponents scoreless in the final quarter. The final score of 29-23 assured St. Colman's a place in the semi-finals this Saturday.
