The An Taisce sponsored Spring Clean message doesn't alter greatly from year to year. Around this time residents of cities, towns, villages and rural communities are urged to do their bit in keeping the country tidy. While the message is a simple one, there's plenty of evidence to suggest it's regularly ignored.

This, however, shouldn't take from the sustained and concerted effort by individuals and groups who are doing great work maintaining their areas.

On Saturday morning last, public representatives, local volunteers and other interested parties attended the Spring Clean launch in Fermoy. Young Darragh Tobin had the honour of raising the flag. Politicians in attendance included councillors, Noel McCarthy, Tadhg O'Donovan, John Murphy and Frank O'Flynn. Also lending his support to the campaign was IBAL (Irish Businesses Against Litter) chairman, Dr Tomas Cavanagh.

Dr Cavanagh said Fermoy had come a long way in a relatively short period and its consistently 'clean to European norms' status was something townspeople could be justifiably proud of. He urged against complacency and encouraged everyone, especially residents' associations, to be vigilant against littering and take the lead when it came to maintaining their streets and estates.
