As part of a collaboration between a group of architects, education professionals and Ballyhoura Development, 'Small Town Studio' are offering €30,000 worth of expertise and skilled labour to bring a project in the Ballyhoura area to life.
The aim of the studio is to bring investment, finance and expertise to communities in rural Limerick, Cork and Tipperary and to get people thinking and talking about potential projects for their area.
Gerard Walsh, one of the architects involved, from Anglesboro, explained that this is part of Limerick City of Culture 2014 - project ideas could be things like a pop up cinema in Caherconlish, an information pavilion in Kilmallock mart, an exhibition space in Hospital or street furniture to enhance Galbally's chances in the Tidy Towns competition.
"The Irish hinterland is a rich tapestry of small towns, villages and rural communities, each with their own cultural identity that is fiercely rooted in their surroundings and heritage," he explained.
This design/build project will culminate with an 8-week workshop, beginning in July 2014. The project must be modest and achievable in the time span, but also visionary and ambitious in its aspirations. In terms of design, the architects and education professionals will consult with people in the community, assess the local needs and try to think of a project which will complement and nourish the spirit of the town or village.
'Small Town Studio' are inviting people from communities within the Ballyhoura region to apply to them with their ideas and they are currently gathering expressions of interest. The closing date for submissions is January 24 and those interested in getting a form or seeking information can e-mail smalltownstudiogroup@gmail.com
