In terms of entertainment and as a visual spectacle, last weekend's Sleeping Beauty in Fermoy delivered spectacularly. Any reviewer or critic would be hard pressed to pick holes in this superbly produced show. So often in the world of high brow theatre children and 'shoo shooed' away from the auditorium - pantomime is unique in welcoming them in and shock horror, giving them important stage roles. Invariably, they're never overawed or overwhelmed by the experience, invariably, they perform with joy in their hearts and in so doing, give theatre goers the thrill of their lives.
Hats off to director, Killian Collins for taking on the challenge and putting on a super show. Also kudos to his enterprising choreographer, Stephen Cullinane-O'Regan. The elevation of Killian and Stephen to such key roles signals the arrival of a new theatrical generation which can only be good news for the sector.
TOP CLASS
The venue is another critical piece of the equation and in the Palace Theatre you have a perfect setting for any type of stage production. As usual manager, Kieran Barry, was to the fore during the weekend - overseeing the operation and guiding things along in a quietly efficient manner. Facilities are excellent at the Palace Theatre, with the comfort of patrons always a priority.
Killian's attention to detail was a characteristic of Sleeping Beauty and no effort was spared to secure superb costumes and authentic props - these, combined with excellent lighting made for a super show. Overall, the crowds were very good with nearly all supporting the interval raffle and partaking in the cup of tea.
The back stage team need to be really on their game to carry off a successful panto and the lads were fortunate to be able to draw on a pool of such dedicated individuals - all amateurs who carried out their duties in a most professional manner.
In the aftermath of this production, it's safe to say that theatre in Fermoy is in tip-top shape - with talented and able young people at the helm and a new generation successfully introduced to the stage, great days and some great night lay ahead.
