Gardai were met with slashooks, when they went to affect arrests on foot of warrants, at a Traveller encampment located at Coome, Glenville. Taking the encampment by surprise, Gardai managed to apprehend one man, but not before being met with “a barrage of slashooks”. A second man was also arrested, following a chase through nearby fields.

Major traffic management changes were on the cards in Fermoy, aimed at combating the chronic situation being experienced in the town. Garda Sergeant Joe Watkins confirmed that traffic lights would be turned off on the main Cork/Dublin route daily during peak periods, with Gardai directing the traffic flow themselves. The possibility of a traffic warden for the town was also suggested by Councillor Michael Hanley, with support from UDC vice chairperson, Cllr Aileen Pyne, who described the situation as “chronic”, following a wide ranging survey which had been conducted.

The tills were ringing in the town of Lismore, where numbers visiting had rocketed following the launch of the new Heritage Centre, incorporating an Interpretative Centre. School tours were booming, with well over 1,000 children passing through the centre, at a very reasonable £1 entry each (including a guided tour of the town), from the counties of Waterford, Tipperary and Cork. Benefiting the economy of the town, manager at the Centre, Mary Houlihan told The Avondhu that on average 3 schools were visiting daily and she was “delighted” with the uptake.

Glanworth residents in Richard Rice Place were fed up with politicians’ promises, which had failed to ensure completion of works at the rear of the estate. The Local Authority estate, residents claimed, had a rat-infested ditch, due to the estate not being properly walled off. One resident commented on the “broken promises and unfinished work”, with fear for the safety and health of the residents' children.

Popular watering house, An Cu Chulainn in Ballyhooly, changed hands through Auctioneer Jim McCarthy, with local couple John and Bridget O’Sullivan from Rahard taking ownership. With plans for a renovation and expansion, the takeover from Noreen Simmons, came at the same time that The Castle Tavern was for sale. With no one having yet reached the reserve price, Auctioneer Jim McCarthy described “a lot of bidding” on the public house.

Eleven members from Mitchelstown Macra na Feirme were set to compete in the Cork County Summer Efficiency competition. Those participating were: Anne Baker (Gardening), Pat Condon (Carpentry), Pat Mullins (Building), John Hyland and Eamonn Rea (Method and Management), Mike Clifford (Art), Maria Carey (Make ‘n’ Model), Pearl Robinson and Marie Sheehan (Cookery), Siobhan O’Keeffe and John Geary (Novelty Sports).

The “antics” of drivers returning home following the Munster hurling championship encounter between Cork and Tipperary, held in Páirc Ui Chaoimh, were clamped down on swiftly by Fermoy Gardai. With some lunatic drivers overtaking three abreast, or trying to pass slower motorists on the inside, checkpoints were in operation and cautions issued. Thankfully, no accidents were reported or convictions for drink driving.

What was described as the “weakest performance of the year” by Mitchelstown junior footballers, saw Kildorrery emerge victorious in an encounter which doubled as a junior football league and Festival of the Galtees tournament tie, played in Mitchelstown. After a promising start for the home club, with Aidan Cotter striking for an early goal, Kildorrery recovered from a 6 point deficit, trailing at the interval on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-3. The men from the hill forged ahead in the second period and a late rally saw them emerge by the bare minimum. M’town team: Alan Griffin, Tony Mullally, Denis Maher, John Cleary, Declan Power, Niall O’Donnell, Diarmuid Lynch, John Walsh, John McGrath, Jim Kenneally, Kieran Cotter, Aidan Cotter, John Barrett, Cyril Kelly, Michael Kelly. Subs: Edward Walsh and Anthony Hanrahan.
