Glenroe man and Principal of Shanballymore NS, Michael O'Sullivan will be fundraising this week to raise money for his upcoming trip to Uganda, where he will be doing volunteer work as a teacher.

While Michael has paid for his own accommodation, flights and vaccinations, the charity he is going over with, Nurture Africa require him to raise €2,000 which will be used for teaching resources and building materials.

Thanks to a €500 grant from the INTO, he has just €1,500 left to raise and he will be holding three fundraisers locally to achieve this.

This Thursday, June 13, there will be a table quiz for primary school children between third and sixth class in Kildorrery Community Hall at 7pm. Teams of four are €20 and anyone interested can contact the school on 022-25611.

Then, this weekend, on Saturday, June 15 he will hold a coffee evening in Glenroe Community Hall at 7.30pm after Mass and all are welcome.

Throughout the week, raffle tickets will be on sale for a luxury hamper in Shanballymore Post Office and Coral Dry Cleaners in Mitchelstown and the draw will take place at the coffee evening on Saturday.

Michael first learned about the Nurture Africa programme online on a teacher's website and he told The Avondhu that it is something he has always wanted to do.

Having graduated from Mary Immaculate College just five years ago, Michael is hoping that he will be able to bring modern teaching methodologies with him to Uganda, so that he can pass them onto the teachers there.

He added that he hopes to give a presentation in both Glenroe and Shanballymore on his time in Uganda upon his return and he will also use his experiences in Africa in the classrooms in Shanballymore to show the students how important volunteering can be.

Michael said that he is looking forward to the experience, as he thinks it will be very rewarding. He will be travelling to Uganda on July 20, where he will work with Nurture Africa as a volunteer teaching children and orphans affected by HIV or AIDS to give them the highest standard of health care and education.

Nurture Africa gives children with HIV access to lifesaving medication, which stops the HIV from replicating in their bodies and it also allows them to stay in school, which means that they could go on to study in university, get a job and become a pillar of society in Uganda thanks to the work of the volunteers like Michael.

All support for any of the fundraisers would be greatly appreciated and all of the money raised will go directly to Nurture Africa to improve education and health standards for children with HIV or AIDS.
