Shanballymore NS car park must be fixed before someone is killed – says Principal

Will a child or parent have to be killed before anything is done?” – Michael O’Sullivan

The parents of children in Shanballymore National School are now going to send a petition to Cork County Council in an effort to have repairs carried out on the public car park outside the school, before an accident is caused.

The issue was raised in a Mallow Area Committee meeting, by Cllr Noel O'Connor who said that the car park needs a complete overhaul, but some repairs should at least be carried out.

He was told that the car park is the property of the diocese, not the council, and that they do not have the resources to undertake the works. This was not accepted by the Principal of the national school, Michael O'Sullivan, who argued that when the houses across the road from the school were built, an agreement was made with the council that they would maintain it and this is not being done.

The Principal said that he is terrified that a child will be knocked down in the car park one of these days.

"The surface of the car park at the moment is very dangerous. There are loose chippings everywhere. There are large potholes. We had an incident last year whereby a parent fell into one of the potholes and injured themselves. Where will this end? Will a child or parent have to be killed before anything is done?", the Principal pleaded.

He added that while the size of the car park is sufficient to meet the needs of the school, there are no parking lines, leading to cars parking everywhere, the entrance and exit barriers are badly positioned taking up four spaces, there is no rubbish bin which is leading to litter, and there is no disabled parking space or set down area.

He said that with the rising numbers in the school, this problem is only set to worsen.

Urging the council to pay heed to his request, the Principal, who is one of many people in the village who has written to the council on this issue, said that the village has gotten very little from the council in recent years, with the footpaths and approach roads in bad repair.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Michael O'Sullivan said that he is not accepting the council's response and he will be taking the issue further.
