Shock waves hit the community of Shanballymore over the weekend following news of a horrific assault on a young local man in Liverpool.
24-year-old Stephen Donegan remains in a critical condition following the late night assault, allegedly by a British soldier. Stephen suffered serious head injuries and was placed in a medically-induced coma at the Walton Centre NHS foundation at Royal Liverpool Hospital. His parents Connie and Catherine, along with sister Sinead, have travelled to Liverpool to be at his bedside.
A graduate of Limerick Institute of Technology, Stevie works as a farm manager locally and had travelled to Liverpool to attend a party for a friend. He was discovered in the early hours of Saturday morning in an alleyway and emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 2.20am.
A 19-year-old soldier, Kyle Harley handed himself over to police on Sunday, and was charged with causing grievous bodily harm. His case has been sent to the crown court for a hearing on March 23.
Stevie has been described as a talented GAA player, and was part of the Shanballymore team that won an U-21 Cork double in 2009 and 2011. He has also claimed a north Cork football title with the club in 2012 and a Division 2 hurling title in 2007.
