The Glashaboy River in Carrignavar is being polluted by sewage, believed to be flowing from a nearby waste water treatment unit in the village.

Local resident Helen Noonan described the issue as ‘absolutely disgusting’, saying that the sewage is ‘running into the river, and then it’s flowing into a lake which is full of wildlife’.

Residents have made a number of complaints to Cork County Council who told the Avondhu this week that all waste water issues have been transferred to Irish Water.

Ms Noonan says she reported the issue to the Environmental Protection Agency, and was informed that they forwarded details of her complaint to Irish Water, who would be in contact with her in relation to addressing the issue.

This paper contacted Irish Water about the problem, but they have not released a statement in time for going to press.

Ms Noonan adds: “There is a sewage system in the middle of a field just at the entrance to the village, which is completely open. There are exit pipes going out of it, but where they are going I don’t know, but obviously they’re going to the river.”

She says this issue has been on-going for two years and is simply 'unacceptable'.
