The Rice name in Fermoy is synonymous with sport and sporting achievements.
One of the Rice family still braving the sporting scene at an advanced age is 74-year-old John Rice, who recently claimed a seven medal haul at the Munster Masters T&F Championships in MTU.
Competing in seven events in one day, John claimed the gold in the discus (1kg) with 19.40m, in 100m sprint, in the high jump and in the hammer (4kg) with 27.10m. He won silver in the shot (4kg) with 6.08m, in javelin (500g) and in weight for distance.
“I got 7 medals. That’s the best I ever got. I entered 8 events and I was lucky to be able to do 7 because they clash with each other,” John said.
