As momentum grows ahead of the Dromana 800 festival in July, Senator David Norris has been announced as the latest scholar who will attend over the course of the three-day event.

Dromona 800 is a celebration of the 800th anniversary of the charter from King John to the Norman knight Thomas Fitz Anthony, Seneschal of Leinster, granting him the present-day counties of Waterford and Cork.

From the time when Thomas Fitz Anthony’s daughter married John Fitz Thomas FitzGerald, their descendants have lived at Dromana, five kilometres from Cappoquin.

Between July 2nd and 5th, a host of exciting events will take place across West Waterford, including Dromana House, Cappoquin House and Tourin House & Gardens, to celebrate the anniversary.

Senator Norris joins a number of speakers already confirmed, including local historian and author, Julian Walton, UCC medieval history lecturer, Dr Diarmuid Scully and Irish academic and historian, Kenneth W Nicholls.

Senator Norris will attend the Georgian Fete in Villierstown on Sunday, July 5th, to celebrate the 275th anniversary of the foundation of the village in 1740.

As well as being a historian, an academic and a politician, Senator Norris is passionate about Georgian Architecture and is a member of the Irish Georgian Society.  He is currently campaigning for the establishment of a new body to reverse the decline of Georgian Dublin.

For one day the village will be transformed back to its origins with displays of traditional crafts such as basket making, weaving, thatching, bee keeping, blacksmithing and lace making, which will all be on display in Villierstown.

Among the events during the festival is a historic tour of the houses of West Waterford, on July 2nd. The tour takes in Cappoquin House & Gardens, the Lismore Heritage Centre, Lismore Gardens, Tourin House & Gardens, and Salterbridge House in Cappoquin, where writer Robert O’Byrne will give a lecture on ‘The Beauties of the Blackwater’.

Among others events during the week include a reflective commemoration of the Battle of Affance by Cappoquin Heritage Group, as well as regular Blackwater cruises. For more information, see www.dromana800.com.
