Rarely a week goes by without some report about illegal dumping - it's an added source of disappointment that the problems extends from town centres to remote country locations.

How much progress the authorities are making in combating the situation is debatable, however, it's generally agreed that increased vigilance can play a role in reducing the so called 'fly tipping'.

Richie Sullivan, from Clogheen, is someone who has given long and distinguished service to his native village and he was moved this week to go public about incidents of dumping in and around this most scenic part of the country.

"I have no problem going public and making a stand on this issue, I go for a 3 mile walk in the evenings and I come home depressed when I see the level of dumping that's going on, it's totally uncalled for and seems to be getting worse, it's wrong on a whole range of levels and it's incredible to think that we think so little of our surroundings that we are prepared to throw all kinds of rubbish into forests, hedgerows and mountains," Richie told The Avondhu this week.

He also highlighted the economic costs associated with county council staff cleaning up after offenders. He went on to earnestly appeal to a misguided minority to desist from spoiling and defacing our country.
