Independent TD for Tipperary South, Mattie McGrath, has welcomed the announcement of the 2014 Schools Minor Works Grant by Education Minister, Jan O’Sullivan. Deputy McGrath made his comments after the Minister confirmed that the grant to every primary school in Tipperary with permanent recognition will be issued this week.

“For many schools this grant will be an absolute lifeline in terms of acting as a kind of transitional funding arrangement. At present there are way too many of our schools that are trying to function in conditions that are totally unacceptable.

SHORTFALL NEEDS ADDRESSING

“This grant will, I hope, alleviate some of the enormous pressure that the boards of management are under in trying to cope with increased costs and scare resources. We know that a lot of the funding shortfall is increasingly falling back on parents and that needs to be urgently addressed.”

Deputy McGrath said in the longer term a more sustainable approach is needed so schools, such as Gaelscoil Cluain Meala, will not have to continue relying on this kind of ‘piecemeal funding’.

“That being said, the payment of a minimum of €5,500 per school is a welcome step forward,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
