Regardless of what the Budget brought, (or didn’t bring), the people living in the tiny West Waterford village of Ballysaggart must be happy with the recent announcement that the village is to have 20 street lights installed.

Coupled with this, the local GAA Club is to receive €75,000 from the Sports Capital Programme.

What joy there would be within rural communities if Michael Noonan and his ministerial colleagues could wave their magic wand and promise something similar to every village in the country?

While this is a ridiculous notion, one can only imagine the joy and realisation that you are not being forgotten it would bring. Many rural communities feel they are forgotten when the request for even one extra street light, a local road repair or the removal of a bad bend goes unanswered.

More the reason then that we continue to be cohesive in our approach towards improving our own areas. Not wishing to take from Ballysaggart’s good fortune, but the people of Kilworth who contributed in different ways towards the completion of the Coach Road footpath, can take a bow this week with the project’s successful completion - albeit with the help and co-operation of the County Council.

What is important to remember though is - this particular project would not have happened without the community’s own fair share of local input!
